Roofing FAQ for Flathead Valley Homeowners
Straight answers from roofers about Montana snow, hail, insurance claims and new roofs.
Winter
Montana snow loads & winter roofs
How much snow can a roof in Montana hold?
It depends on how the roof was designed and built. Design snow loads are set by the local building department and vary by location and elevation, with higher-elevation areas generally requiring more. If your roof sags or creaks, or you see new cracks in interior walls or doors that suddenly stick after heavy snow, call a professional.
Should I remove snow from my roof?
Most properly built roofs are designed to carry normal snow loads. Unusually deep or heavy wet snow, drifting or ice dams can be a concern. Never climb onto a snowy roof; a roof rake used from the ground or a professional is safer, and aggressive snow removal can damage shingles.
What causes ice dams and how can I prevent them?
Ice dams form when heat from the house melts snow on the upper roof and the water refreezes at the colder eaves. Balanced attic ventilation, good insulation and air sealing help keep the roof deck cold and reduce ice dams. See our attic ventilation page.
Storms
Hail & storm damage
How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
From the ground, look for dented gutters, downspouts, vents or flashing, and granules washing out of downspouts. Hail bruising on shingles is often only visible up close, so schedule a roof inspection after a significant hail storm.
What is a Class 4 impact-resistant roof?
Class 4 is the highest rating in the standard impact test for roofing products. Brava synthetic shake, which we install, carries a Class 4 impact rating. Some insurers offer discounts for impact-resistant roofs; ask your agent.

Will my insurance cover roof damage from hail or wind?
Many homeowners policies cover sudden damage from hail and wind, but coverage, deductibles and filing deadlines vary. Check your policy or ask your agent. We can inspect and document damage and help you through the insurance claim.
How long do I have to file a roof insurance claim?
Every policy is different, and many have time limits for reporting damage. Read your policy or ask your agent, and get your roof inspected soon after a storm.
Do you meet with insurance adjusters?
Yes. We can meet with your adjuster to review the roof damage as part of our insurance claims help.

What should I ask a roofer before I sign?
Ask who will actually install the roof, whether the estimator has installed roofs, what every layer of the system is, exactly what the price includes, and whether a repair would do. See our questions to ask any roofer.
